Alert status of volcano in North Maluku of Indonesia

A volcano in North Maluku was put on Alert III  status on Thursday following an increase in activity over the past few days.Volcanic activity at

Mt. Ibu in West Halmahera regency, North Maluku is causing tectonic and volcanic earthquakes. Th

 

e mountain has also spewed grey smoke a few times since March 31, according to the Center for Vulcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation (PVMBG) in Bandung, West Java
on Thursday.
“The PVMBG has sent a letter to relevant agencies about the increase in volcanic activity on the mountain,” said a spokesman of the regency administration, Kalbi Rasyid.
“According to the PVMBG, the condition at the moment is not too dangerous, so residents do not have to be evacuated,” Rasyid said.

Meanwhile, Mt. Gamalama in Ternate, North Maluku has been spewing thick smoke since Tuesday, said a local resident.

 

The mountain is one of five volcanoes in the province which is still active. Last year it also showed increasing activity but did not erupt.The last eruption major eruption of  Mt. Gamalama occurred in 1983.
