High waves which hit the Pamekasan regency, Madura, in the past three months, had destroyed at least 10 houses in the coast of the area.

The high waves coupled with high velocity winds had cost the local population material loss amounting to Rp 100 million, said Faruk, a villager.

Faruk said that 2-meter high waves have entered the coastal areas destroying houses and other building in their path.

The high waves can now easily enter the coastal areas as there were no longer sand dunes which in the past had also served an obstacle to the raging waves to enter the coastal areas. Illegal quarrying had caused the disappearance of the dunes.

The villagers had called on the local administration to do something to correct the situation.(*)
