Flash floods which hit Situbondo district, East Java province, on Friday ,Feb 8 night left 11 residents dead, while hundreds of houses were swept away and thousands others inundated.Wiyono, head of the nation-integrity affairs office confirmed here on Sunday that 11 people were found dead and at least 44 others were treated in local hospital for their injuries.
In addition, as many as 601 houses collapsed and swept away and some 4,664 houses in 19 villages in six subdistricts were seriously inundated.
The flash floods forced 25 families to take shelter at the Situbondo grand mosque, as no shelter has been set up for the victims.
“Now we have nothing left, because the flash flood is hitting us, I only thought of safing by five children,” said Yasid, a Pauwan resident who with his family also joined the other victims at the mosque.
The flood victims are now in dire need of food, drinking water and clothes, he said, adding that the flood water had also polluted the wells of every home.
Yasid said he did not know whether the local schools would still be open because many had been inundated too.(*)
