Strong quake rocks Indonesia`s Maluku islands

Jakarta (ANTARA News) – A strong 6.3-magnitude quake hit off Indonesia’s Maluku islands early Monday, but there were no reports of casualties or damage, the meteorological agency said.

The underwater quake hit at 5:26 am local time (2026 GMT Sunday) and was centered 190 kilometres (117.8 miles) northwest of Ternate island in the Maluku chain, the Indonesian Meteorological Agency was quoted by AFP as saying in a statement.

The quake was 67 kilometres under the floor of the Maluku Sea, it said adding that the temblor did not have the potential to cause a tsunami.

Indonesia sits on the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, where the meeting of continental plates means seismic activity is common. (*)
