Bengkulu (ANTARA News) – A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 6.3 rocked the Indonesian province of Bengkulu on Friday, causing panic to residents.
The epicenter of the quake which struck at 02.29 p.m. was in the sea about 75 km southwest of Muko Muko district in Bengkulu at a depth of 10 km, spokesman of the local meteorology and geophysics station Sujud SP said.
Friday`s quake did not have the potential to cause a tsunami, he said.
The 30-second temblor caused the glass windows of houses and offices to tremble.
“I am still traumatized (by a spate of quakes in the past). When I felt tremble I quickly rushed outdoors,” an employee of the provincial legislative body said.
There was no immediate report of casualties.
An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.9 rocked Bengkulu and neighboring provinces on September 12 last year, killing 13 people and destroying tens of thousands of houses, school buildings, and places of worship at a total loss of an estimated Rp700 billion.(*)
