Jakarta, Jan 1 (ANTARA) – The Health Ministry`s Crisis Mitigation Center disclosed that the recent floods and landslides in Central Java and East Java have left 102 people dead and 21 others missing, an official said here Tuesday.
The victims consisted of 78 dead and 12 missing in Central Java, and 24 dead and nine missing in East Java.
The center`s head, Rustam S Pakaya, said in a written statement that the center has sent relief aid to the flood and landslide victims.
The assistance to Central Java consisted of four rubber boats, baby`s food or biscuits (20 tons), instant noodle (15 tons) and Rp200 million in cash.
The relief aid to East Java comprised three rubber boats, ten tons of biscuits and Rp250 million in cash.
Meanwhile, it was reported that at least 23 people in Ngawi district, East Java, were killed in floods as Bengawan Solo river overflowed in the past several days.
Four of the dead flood victims came from Ngawi subdistrict, 10 from Kwadungan subdistrict, three from Geneng subdistrict, one from Padas subdistrict and another one from Pitu subdistrict, while the dead landslide victims came from Sine subdistrict.
Coordinator of Coordination and Implementation of the Disaster Mitigation Unit in Ngawi district, Muhammad Sodik Tri, said most of the victims were elderly people.
“Some of them died of illness and the rest trapped in the floodwaters inundating their homes,” he said.(*)
