Landslides in Central Java, 91 People Killed

Semarang, C Java (ANTARA News) – Golkar Party`s General Chairman Jusuf Kalla provided relief assistance to natural disasters in Central Java which had killed at least 91 people, a functionary of the party has said.

“I am appointed by Golkar Party`s General Chairman Jusuf Kalla to observe the condition in the field and bring (Kala`s) relief assistance to the natural disaster victims in Central java,” the party`s associate chairman for people`s welfare, Firman Soebagyo, said here Thursday.

The natural disasters — landslides, floods and whirlwind — in Central Java`s districts of Karanganyar, Wonogiri, Grobogan, Pekalongan, Sragen, Solo and Banyumas have reportedly killed 91 people.

According to Firman, the assistance showed the Golkar Party general chairman`s concern over the victims of the recent natural disasters in Central Java.

He pointed out that the patry`s general chairman provided Rp50 million worth of assistance to Karanganyar, Rp25 million to Wonogiri, Rp25 million to Pekalongan, Rp25 million to Grobogan, Rp25 million to Solo and Rp25 million to Banyumas.

Firman said the relief assistance was given during the emergency period while the one for recovery process would be considered later.

“Bapak (Mr) Jusuf Kalla is calling on all the elements of Golkar Party`s regional chapters to take part in the process of searching for, handling and evacuating the natural disaster victims in the six districts,” he said.

He said Jusuf Kalla, concurrently Indonesia`s vice president, had yet to directly observe areas hit by the natural disasters and he appointed the Home Affairs Minister in place of him (Jusuf Kalla) for the purpose. (*)
