Pamekasan, Madura (ANTARA News) – Floods inundated SMA Muhammadiyah, an Islamic senior high school, and hundreds of houses in Pamekasan District, Madura Island, East Java Province, on Tuesday.
The floodwaters which had been triggered by incessant rains since Monday, caused the school building to stand in more than one meter high water and damaged some of the school`s furniture and books.
The school was closed and students were forced to stay home due to the flood, Moh Sadik, a teacher at SMA Muhammadiyah, said here on Tuesday.
The floods also inundated hundreds of houses in Laden, Patemon, Baru Rambat Kota, Baru Rambat Timur, Budagan, Muntok, Kaduara Barat, Parteker and Jelma Kota villages Pamekasan District.
Laden village was the worst hit with floodwaters reaching a height of up to one meter. Mariyamah (45), a local resident of Laden, said flood victims had not yet received any flood assistance from any party, including the local authorities.
There were no immediate reports of casualties in the floods.
Meanwhile, a whirlwind and heavy rains hit Sana Daya village, Pasean sub district, Pamekasan District, on Monday, damaging corn fields.(*)
