Gorontalo flood forces thousands to flee

Gorontalo (ANTARA News) – A flash flood swept through many areas in the city of Gorontalo on Wednesday, forcing thousands of people to flee their homes and seek the safety of higher ground. Relief workers had difficulty distributing relief aid among evacuees as almost all roads in the city were inundated.

The water level rose to 1 meter in a number of areas such as Ipilo, Bugis, Tenda, Heledulaa and Biawan, an ANTARA News journalist observed.The flood also paralyzed shopping complexes.
According to data collected by the central flood command post, around 4,500 people had fled their homes and were being sheltered at 12 different locations. The figure was recorded at 2,520 on Tuesday.Many government offices were deserted as their employees had taken the day off.The flood also hit neighboring districts such as Bone Bolango, Boalemo, and North Gorontalo.
